As apple farms across NY State brace themselves for the happy hordes of apple pickers, it follows that there will be festivities built around this annual fall festival. The 21st annual Wayne County Apple Tasting Tour is one such.

Since 1997, apple lovers throughout western and central New York have explored one or the other family farm in Wayne County to pick varieties of apples (think golden delicious) from apple trees located in acres of apple orchards, enjoy the fall colors, and enjoy a day of family fun. The Apple Tour tradition has grown through the years, and so has its offerings for adults. Now home to three wineries, three cideries (apple cider, of course) and one distillery, there’s plenty for everyone.

Harvest season in apple country is October, and that’s the best time to visit the 13 local orchards, farm markets and apple-related businesses on the trail. The official “Tasting Weekend” takes place over Columbus Day weekend each year, with lots of activities and extra celebrations that include . But the tour happens all month.

Just about every stop on the trail is home to more than one activity – think picking apples, then sitting down to lunch (like at Lagoner Farm Market). Or wine tasting, then letting the kids have fun on a giant jumping pillow or exploring the Amazing Maize Maze (at Long Acre Farms and JD Wine Cellars).
