Lake Seneca And Other New York Winter Destinations For Canadians

Among the many destinations that New York state has to offer peripatetic Canadians who wish to experience the many varieties of winter, Lake Seneca and Lake Placid are givens. When it comes to winter, few people know it like Canadians. While Canada has many beautiful attractions and events in the winter, there is something to be said about travelling due south to explore the many attractions of winter in upstate New York, ranging from mountains, state parks and more. And these five destinations are but a small selection of what Canadians can find.

Lake Seneca: Belhurst Castle

Formerly a private residence on the shores of Lake Seneca in the Finger Lakes region near Watkins Glen and Geneva, New York, it was built between 1885 and 1889 and has quite the history behind it. The three-storey building features a slate gable roof, a one-story solarium, projecting porches, towers with pyramid roofs and more. Prior to being one of the top winter destinations for Canadians in Upstate New York, it was a speakeasy during Prohibition, a casino, supper club and restaurant. Today, it is a hotel that features three lodging buildings, two ballrooms and two restaurants.

While at the hotel you can take part in the Seneca Lakes Wine Trail, something generic to Lake Seneca, and enjoy all the wineries in the region, even in the winter. There is also the Wine on Ice in nearby Elmira, where a hockey arena is transformed into a wine tasting festival, where connoisseurs enjoy varieties available near Lake Seneca such as riesling and cabernet franc.
