The Strong National Museum of Play is the only collections-based museum anywhere devoted to the study of play. Located in Rochester, New York (about 90 minutes driving from Niagara Falls), The Strong Museum is Western New York’s largest cultural attraction and has more than 100,000 square-feet of dynamic, hands-on exhibit space and the largest collection of toys, dolls, board games, video games, and other historical materials related to play in the world.
The Strong offers a variety of customizable group tour options, including interpretative services with reservations. Packages can combine museum admission with an experience in The Strong’s Dancing Wings Butterfly Garden, upstate New York’s only year-round indoor butterfly garden, or include tokens to play The Strong’s classic arcade and pinball games. Guided tours of the museum offer insight into the world’s most iconic artifacts of play such as early, handmade Monopoly sets, Thomas Edison’s Talking Doll, Barbie No. 1, and more. Groups who want a more in-depth experience can explore museum spaces seldom seen by the public with a museum curator. Groups can also receive special access to The Strong’s International Center for the History of Electronic Games laboratory to learn how staff collect, preserve, study, and interpret video games materials.
The museum also produces several and adult-focused and student itineraries that appeal to a variety of interests to assist group operators seeking new experiences for their clients within New York State. Itinerary focuses include cultural immersions at art and photography museums in the area, exploration in regional parks and gardens, performance opportunities for students, and more.
“We offer packages and itineraries that suit a variety of tour groups,” says Karen Dodson, tourism sales associate at The Strong. “With thousands of artifacts and nearly two dozen exhibits, The Strong can provide groups a one-of-a-kind experience they won’t have anywhere else. We look forward to welcoming groups from around the world to visit the museum and to see what the Finger Lakes region has to offer.”
The museum welcomes more than 550,000 guests per year representing all 50 states and many foreign countries. The Strong offers an array of amenities for tour groups, including spacious dining options, ample motor coach parking, free Wi-Fi, ATMs, catering facilities, and more. Group and FIT rates are available by contacting Karen Dodson at kdodson@museumofplay.org.
