The northernmost stop on the trail is the Fly By Night Cookie Company in Fair Haven that features homemade pastries, cookies, pies and cakes all made from scratch with real eggs, butter and fresh fruit from local farms and no chemicals or preservatives added. Sitting on their porch with a bag of cookies and a glass of iced tea watching the world go by is pure pleasure!
The southernmost stop and new to the Trail this year is the King Ferry Corner Store. Built in the 1930s and carefully remodeled to preserve the warmth and character of a classic old time grocery, the King Ferry Corner Store offers specialties that range from freshly baked breads and pastries to gluten free brownies plus a wide array of locally produced artisanal items such as maple syrup, jellies and jams.
In the center of the Cayuga County there is a cluster of Sweet Treat Trail stops including Auburn and Aurora Farmers Markets where you will find local honey, fresh fruit, jams, jellies and baked goods; Morgan’s Half Acre Produce known for their fruit pies and fresh fruit shakes; and New Hope Mills Store and Café, featuring maple syrup with their famous pancakes plus many others, each offering their own unique sweet treat. The Finger Lakes Sweet Treat Trail was created by the Cayuga County Office of Tourism in 2013 to promote the County’s agricultural bounty and capture the interest of the culinary tourism traveler. Culinary tourism is a popular and growing niche in cultural travel that blends food, beverages (particularly beer, wine and cider) and travel into a unique visitor experience that holds huge potential for development in the Finger Lakes tourism industry. Simply put, food and beverage are attractions just like a museum or an amusement park and thus can be marketed as a product that helps to differentiate businesses, regions and individual destinations and it a great way to tie our agricultural and tourism community together. It used to be that of course people ate when they travelled but now we find people travel just because there are great places to eat and drink. The Trail has become so popular that readers of USA Today voted it one of the top ten food trails in the United States and the New York State Travel and Tourism Industry honored the Trail with their Cultural Heritage award.
Just a tip – some of the charm if the Finger Lakes Sweet Treat is that many of the stops are small and family run so it is always wise to call ahead and confirm hours before you visit as hours and other details can be subject to change.
