The Catskills region offers a wonderful span of opportunities to make the most of winter with these libations. So here’s a guide to wineries and breweries across the region. The local tourism authorities recommend these stops along a rather inviting trail.
The Catskills Craft Beverage Trail is one to check out. And what’s better, it’s a short journey from New York City.

Located in the newly renovated Olympia Hotel, this brewpub overlooks the Delaware River. They offer indoor and outdoor dining, beers and cider on tap, growlers to take home, or even a Reuben Sandwich. The porch seating might be too cold now, but the weather will turn and till then their Callicoon Brown Cow Porter will keep you warm.

Their 1600 sq ft venue in Roscoe can be booked for weddings and parties. They also have live events and bands performing here. But they are more than just a venue. Their beers are award winning like the Brown Ale that won two gold medals at the 2018 NY State Craft Beer Competition. Available on tap, pints, flights and growlers to go.

In the middle of the Claryville Art Center and Event Center, this brewery aims to create an entertainment, art and beer trifecta. The Blue Hill Restaurant & Tasting Room has a menu of homemade Russian dishes.

The 120 acre preserve is at “Beer Mountain.” So they probably took that as an instruction and made a mountain of beer. Serving pilsners and “pils noir” with flavours of chocolate and cocoa.

This cidery in Callicoon is five generations old. Which is why they believe in sustainability and farm-to-table concepts. Their orchard is over 12 acres, with over 1500 trees, boarding houses, a tasting room, a mill and more. Everything is local — from the bread to the cheese to sausages and pickles; and well, to even the local bands performing.

Their vineyards may not be very old, only since 2005, but their commitment to wines is real. They grow Marquette grapes, Cayuga, Arandell, and Aramella grapes organically. They also source all ingredients for their farm-to-table locally and they try “to bring a taste of every season to your plate”.

Located in Barryville — a mere two hours from New York City — Stickett Inn even serves tacos from Pinks in the city. The cidery and taqueria also has a coffee room and rooms. Their cider is dry and hard.

With New York State being large producers of honey and apples, Forthright has made a “cyder” which is a honey and apple cider. Their focus is “to be direct and honest, straightforward and outspoken.”

Apart from the award winning spirits, they have a space for local artists - Stray Cat Gallery. The Peace Vodka, Curious Gin, Wicked White Whiskey, Most Righteous Bourbon, Fearless Wheat Whiskey, One and Only Buckwheat Spirit and Catskill Straight Rye Whiskey are all inspired by Woodstock. The local festival, which the owner attended in 1969, also inspires them to use other local ingredients like NYS grains and Catskills mountain water.

Two hours Northwest of Manhattan, this distillery is the maker of Bootlegger 21 bourbon, gin and vodka. All spirits, they say, are 100% gluten free, corn free and kosher. Tours and tasting are open, safely.

The proprietor Claire Marin started with selling wildflower honeys and now has a distillery, tasting rooms, cheese, chocolate truffles and NYS beer and wine. Their spirits include Pollinator Vodka, Maple Bourbon and Beespoke Gin.

This fifth generation farm has been converted to a farm distillery serving infused vodkas from the wild berries picked on the farm. Being a family owner and run distillery, most of their methods are old school and traditional with a focus on homegrown.

Catskills is also home to many wine and spirits festivals like the Craft Beer Festival and the Wine Festival at Bethel Woods — and for those out-of-staters and internationals and the generally unaware — who don’t know the import of Bethel Woods, it is the home of that other festival, Woodstock.
