The Ward Melville Heritage Organization’s pontoon boat “Discovery” departs from Stony Brook Marine Services located in Stony Brook, NY. The 27-passenger vessel cruises through the organization’s 88-acre wetlands preserve for a 1 1/2 hour tour. A naturalist is onboard and highlights and describes the wildlife and flora that the passengers will see.
The organization collaborates with Camera Concepts and Telescope Solutions to bring special photography cruises to interested visitors. Each session begins ½ an hour earlier on land with a discussion from a Camera Concepts photography instructor and the cruise sets off directly afterward. There is also a 15-30 minute wrap-up/critique session after.
The “Discovery” Cruise Program was developed by The Ward Melville Heritage Organization in cooperation with Stony Brook University’s School of Marine
and Atmospheric Sciences. The “Discovery” was made possible through a grant sponsored by New York State Senator John J. Flanagan, 2nd District. This project was partially funded by the Zoos, Botanical Gardens & Aquariums Grant Programs
which is administered by the New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation.
Cruises are scheduled according to the tide table through October 20. Advance reservation tickets are $28 for adults, $25 for seniors 60+ and students, and $18 for children under 6. Group discounts are available! Photography cruises are $50 pp.
