2017 Opening Day at the Thomas Cole National Historic Site

Join us for Opening Day of our 2017 season. The historic site is offering free admission from 11 am to 2 pm. This special event will include the opening the 2017 exhibition Sanford R. Gifford in the Catskills in Thomas Cole’s New Studio. Sanford R. Gifford was one of the leading members of the Hudson River School, which was founded by Thomas Cole. For the first time, Gifford’s paintings of the region will be on view just a few miles from the sites that inspired them. The Curator is Kevin Avery, Senior Research Scholar at the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Co-Curator is Kate Menconeri. The opening of the exhibition will coincide with the unveiling of The Parlors, an immersive experience that combines technology with historic restoration of the rooms where America’s first major art movement was born.
