Classics on the Hudson:

Serious Fun.......With Very Young Composers

Classics on Hudson and Hudson Hall at the historic Hudson Opera House present a family concert that combines great classical music with a chance to hear some of the “Very Young Composers” – a program created by composer, educator, and bassist Jon Deak. The concert will take place on Sunday, April 30 at 3pm at the Henry Hudson Hall.

Mr. Deak will be presenting several very young composers (6 to 10 years old) who have composed and arranged original works entirely by themselves for this concert. Flutist Eugenia Zukerman (Artistic Director of Classics on Hudson) and Mr. Deak will interact with the children and perform their pieces, as well as more recognizable work.

This concert is made possible with public funds from the Decentralization Program of the NYS Council on the Arts, administered in Greene County by the Greene County Council on the Arts Grants Fund. It is also supported by Stewart’s Holiday Match and Hudson River Bank & Trust Company Foundation.

Jon Deak is the Young Composer Advocate of the New York Philharmonic. A prominent instrumentalist, Jon Deak was for many years the Associate Principal Bassist of the New York Philharmonic. As a composer, he has written over 300 works, and has had his music played by Orchestras such as the Chicago Symphony, the National Symphony and the New York Philharmonic. His Concerto for String Quartet and Orchestra, “The Headless Horseman,” was nominated for a Pulitzer Prize in 1992. His music may also be heard on several TV series and many recordings.

In 1995 he founded the Very Young Composers, a national award-winning program, having since gone international in scope, whereby Public School children, age 9 – 13 have completely composed and orchestrated their own music for the New York Philharmonic, the Colorado Symphony, and ensembles across the country and on four continents.
