Dyeing with Indigo

Indigo has been used by many different cultures for its rich, intense blue. The plant pigment itself will not dye fabric permanently, it must be prepared in a special solution known as a vat.

In this class, we will go through the process of creating an indigo vat, to turn the pigment into a dye that allows it to bond with the fibers.

We'll learn how to keep the ideal state for the vat to provide long lasting colors on fabric, and also go through folding, tying, and binding techniques, known as shibori in Japan, for creating patterns.
