Hong Kong Dragon Boat Festival

, New York City | Arts & Culture , Sport & Games

Hong Kong Dragon Boat Festival is an age-old tradition in China, and dragon boat racing came to New York in 1990—and it has taken root. This year, more than 120 teams from across the US will compete for cash and prizes. But the races are just part of a weekend-long multicultural extravaganza, featuring traditional and modern musical performances, dragon dancing, taiko drumming, martial arts demonstrations by Shaolin Temple masters and plenty of food and drink from local vendors. A colorful multicultural tradition, this festival paddles back to Flushing Meadows Corona Park for a weekend-long celebration. The fest gets its name from the roughly 180 dragon-boat teams from around the world that come to race on the Queens park's lake. Back on shore, expect plenty of traditional food and live entertainment, martial arts demonstrations from the monks of the Shaolin Temple, lion dance performances, Chinese crafts and children's activities. Races take place throughout the day. For more information, visit hkdbf-ny.org. Image: hkdbf-ny.org Source: nycgo.com
