What's New In New York State!

Juneteenth of Buffalo 2016 at Martin Luther King Jr. Park

, New York City | Entertainment

Juneteenth was the oldest known observance of the ending of slavery in the United States; historical records point to June 19, 1865 as the day Maj. General Gordon Granger of the Union Army rode into Galveston, Texas in final execution of the Emancipation Proclamation. On the evening of June 19, 1865, there was great celebration and this is the day, Juneteenth, that will forever commemorate African American freedom. In Buffalo, this fabulous two-day event features great food, live music, street vendors, a parade and much more. The parade starts at Genesee & Moselle Streets and will proceed down Genesee into Martin Luther King Jr. Park, an Olmsted park. (Parade begins at 11am) Come and enjoy a fun-filled weekend for the entire family! The Juneteenth Festival of Buffalo, NY is the third largest in the country. Its mission is to "actively preserve and promote the broad spectrum of African American heritage through educational and cultural activities that will benefit the community as a whole."
