The Year of the Rooster will kick off on January 28 with an elaborate fireworks display in Manhattan’s Chinatown for the Lunar New Year Parade and Festival. On February 5 the celebration continues with a parade through the streets of Chinatown and Little Italy, where food carts will be serving up sweet rice balls, dumplings, steamed turnip cakes and other traditional New Year dishes. Brooklyn’s Sunset Park neighborhood and Flushing, Queens, will also host Lunar New Year events in late January and early February.

The parade wends its way through the main streets of Little Italy and Chinatown, and festivities start at 1pm. A related celebration, the Firecracker Ceremony and Cultural Festival, takes place on January 28, the first day of the Lunar New Year—things get going at 11am, with the fireworks scheduled for noon. Also note that similarly exuberant Lunar New Year events take place in the City’s other Chinatowns: Sunset Park, Brooklyn, and Flushing, Queens.
