Masterworks: 225 Years of Collecting, Albany Institute of History and Art exhibit through September 2016 In 2016, the Albany Institute of History & Art will celebrate its 225th birthday. Few organizations have such distinguished histories or can claim they were founded when George Washington was president. Coincidentally, the Albany Institute (known in 1791 as the Society for the Promotion of Arts, Agriculture, and Manufactures) established its first headquarters in New York City's Federal Hall, the same building where President George Washington took the oath of office less than two years earlier. After moving to Albany with the State government in 1797, the Institute began a long process of collecting. Originally natural history specimens and minerals, The Institute expanded their collection to include historical objects and works of fine and decorative arts, all created, owned, or used in the Upper Hudson Valley of New York. Today, the holdings of the Albany Institute stand out as the finest collection of art and historical materials from the region. To commemorate this significant anniversary, the Albany Institute is developing the exhibition Masterworks: 225 Years of Collecting, which highlights the greatest works from its diverse collections including paintings, furniture, silver, ceramics, sculpture, prints, and much more. http://www.albanyinstitute.org/fact-sheet.html
