Monthly Jazz Jam

Held on the first Wednesday of every month, Jazz Jams are a fun way to hone your skills and jam with your peers. The house band is led by saxophonist Carol Sudhalter. All are welcome, regardless of instrument (vocalists, too!). Don’t play? Come listen! DATE: WED, AUG 2, 7-10 PM

About Carol Sudhalter:

Carol Sudhalter [Wikipedia http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carol_Sudhalter] plays flute, baritone and tenor sax. She placed 9th for Best International Jazz Flutist in Down Beat Magazine’s 77th Annual Jazz Readers’ Poll 2012.

Carol was the first graduate of Smith College to become a jazz musician. She played with the first all-female Latin band, Latin Fever, at the Salsa Festival at Madison Square Garden alongside Tito Puente. She founded, and plays bari in, the Astoria Big Band, which received 20+ Development and Performance Grants, played at Mary Lou Williams Festival, Kennedy Center, and presents many concerts of works by women composers.

Ms. Sudhalter is written up in several books: 1) Leslie Gourse’s “Madame Jazz” (Oxford, 1995), (‘Carol Sudhalter: A Role Model’). 2) W. Royal Stokes’ “Growing Up With Jazz: Twenty-four Musicians Talk About Their Lives and Careers”, (Oxford). 3) Stefano Benini’s ‘Il Flauto Jazz‘ (‘The Jazz Flute’) (Curci 2011). 4) John Watson‘s outstanding book of jazz photographs, ‘The Power of Jazz” (Blurb, 2008).

For 15 years Carol played the Cajun Restaurant Sunday Brunch, with Jimmy The Face Butts; and Al ‘Doc’ Pittman. She has performed in New York at Dizzy’s Club Coca Cola (Lincoln Center), Trumpet’s, Birdland, Danny’s Skylite Room, Iridium, Flushing Town Hall, JVC Jazz Festival. She regularly tours Italy, UK and Switzerland. Jazz festivals include: Mary Lou Williams Festival; The Many Colors Festival; “Pine Grill Reunion” with legendary organist Sarah McLawler; Bethlehem, PA Musikfest. In Europe: Umbria Jazz, Perugia; Villa Celimontana (Rome); JazzAscona, Locarno, Donne in Musica, Frascati; and Swanage and Birmingham Festivals in UK. Notable artists with whom she has played include Sarah Mclawler, Etta Jones, Jimmy Mcgriff, Chico Freeman, Tony Scott, Alan Barnes, Craig Milverton, Greg Abate, Duffy Jackson, Danny Ilett, Rhoda Scott, Henry Butler, Jimmy Cobb and Jason Marsalis.

In spring 2016 she was featured jazz artist with the Jackson Heights Chamber Orchestra, and at the prestigious Flatted Fifth Series, Newark, NJ.

She pioneered several jazz series in her home borough of Queens: “Athens Square Park Jazz Mondays” (1998-2001); Astoria/Lic Waterfront Jazz Festival; Sunset Jazz Concerts at Ralph DeMarco Park. Special honors include a citation by La Guardia College Performing Arts Center for outstanding contributions to the Queens Jazz Community (2002); and the Reverend John Garcia Gensel Award in 2003, from Manhattan Country School, for distinguished service to jazz.

She has spent 40+ years teaching masterclasses and lessons in jazz improvisation, flute, sax and piano, and English Diction for Singers, throughout the U.S. and in Italy. Sudhalter is a recording artist of Alfa Music record label, Rome.
