Nature Journaling with Pfeiffer Nature Center

Pfeiffer Nature Center is honored to have local wildlife artist Jennifer Miller, 2015/2016 Federal Duck Stamp Artist and Pfeiffer Nature Center volunteer with us to explore all three at once with nature drawing/journaling!

Nature drawing is the act of going outdoors and recording one’s personal observations about nature (anything from a sweeping landscape to a tiny mushroom) though the use of drawings and notes. The end result is personal enjoyment, learning, and growth as an observer of the natural world. The goal is not making “perfect art”! Because of this, anyone can do and enjoy nature journaling, regardless of artistic skill.

It has been proven that drawing observed objects (regardless of skill) generates greater memory responses in the brain. Jennifer will speak about the ideas behind nature journaling, demonstrate how to observe natural objects, and encourage the group to do some nature journaling on the spot! If you wish to participate, please bring a sketchbook, journal, or even a lined or unlined notepad, along with your favorite drawing tool (pencil, pen, etc). If you have it, a travel paint kit (such as watercolors) is welcome but not required. Supplies will not be provided; please bring your own. No special supplies are needed beyond paper and pencil; after all, the end result is not “fine art”!

This is an outdoor event, so please dress appropriately. This event will be held at: Pfeiffer Nature Center, Lillibridge Preserve, 1974 Lillibridge Road, Portville, NY 14770. Fee: $10 for non-members, $5 for members. Children under 14 are free. Minors must be accompanied by an adult. Please register by 4 pm, Thursday, September 6th, 2018. Sign up on the Programs Calendar on our website at www.pfeiffernaturecenter.org or contact the office at 716-933-0187. . Pfeiffer Nature Center is supported by United Way Funding.
