Teaching Artists, Spica Wobbe, master puppeteer and Karen Oughtred, theatre artist created The Memory Project, storytelling through visual arts, theater and puppetry to elevate the importance of lifetime storytelling by older adults as the keepers of family tradition, cultural knowledge and historical information. Spica and Karen provide unique programming to stimulate seniors’ senses, imagination and creativity, while supporting their growth as artists. Team teaching allows them to focus on individual needs and maximize learning outcomes. Each session consists of an introductory theatre game, which serves as an icebreaker and link to the focus activity. The heart of the lesson entails making a discrete component of their book though hands on activities. Community is built through group work, improvising, brainstorming and sharing ideas. Participants open their body and mind and use the skills they learn in each session to create a visual diary of their memories in the form of a Pop-Up Memory Book. This tangible keepsake acts as a prompt for them in lifetime storytelling, engaging the curiosity of listeners and delighting both the teller and viewer.
