Hip hop explosion at Queens Theatre

Rennie Harris Puremovement will offer three shows at Queens Theatre this weekend. As such, members of the world’s first and longest-running touring hip hop company will pop, lock, spin, break, step, jump, and glide across the stage in acrobatic, synchronized, and high powered movements.

Tickets run from $25 to $42, and the performances are April 1 at 2 pm and 8 pm and April 2 at 3 pm.

Harris founded and captained dance troupes such as the Step Masters, The Scanner Boys, and Magnificent Force in North Philadelphia in the 1980s and 1990s. For the past 15 years, he’s been running RHP, which  is dedicated to preserving and spreading urban African-American culture while also shattering stereotypes and honoring the voices of new generations.

The group offers three main works: Rome & Jewels, which uses text from Shakespeare and choreography to spin a yarn similar to West Side Story and Romeo and Juliet; Legends of Hip Hop, Students of the Asphalt Jungle, which is a collection of repertory works; and Facing Mekka, which features “butoh-style” dance, integrating a calming, serene space with rap music and exploring how women translate hip hop movement.
